Giving people an appreciation of living with nystagmus/oscillopsia through VR
Features Nystagmus Oscillopsia Sim VR
Nystagmus is an eye movement disorder whereby the sufferers eyes move involuntarily.
Oscillopsia is the symptom of perceiving the world to be in constant motion as a result of the eye motion.
People who develop nystagmus early in life mostly adapt to the eye movements and do not experience oscillopsia, however others have to live with the debilitating effects of oscillopsia continuously.
This app uses real eye tracking data from nystagmus patients and recreates the eye movements in virtual reality.
The app has been produced to help raise awareness of the condition and to help people with nystagmus (and oscillopsia) communicate its debilitating nature.
The apps development was funded by Sheffield Hospitals Charity.
If you would like to support this research and the charity please donate using the following link:www.sheffieldhospitalscharity.org.uk/eyeresearchThe app allows the user to select a type of nystagmus (horizontal, vertical, pendular) from the main menu and subsequently experience the nystagmus within one of 4 scenes.
The Google Cardboard button/trigger must be pressed in order to make selections.Requires Google Cardboard headset.Acknowledgements: Ballet Scene is the property of Samsung and is available here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNi-nnEwc9gThe book in the Reading Scene is "How to be British Collection" by Martyn Ford and Peter Legon

What Our Users Say
Don't just take our word for it. Here's what our users have to say about our Android app.
"Flickers at 120hz, makes me nauseous looking at it, also it disables the back buttons, making it so there is no way to turn it off without restarting the phone. I have nystagmus and was hoping to use this as a demonstration tool, sadly, it's too flawed and the flickering is probably dangerous for some users."
Brandon Semik
"i have congenital horizontal nystagmus but my vision is no where near this bad. i dont get a shaking image like that. i cant imagine how debilitating this must be."
A Google user
"I was born with horizontal nystagmus so my brain has adapted to stabilise the image I see. Being exhausted worsens my eye movements. I also tilt my head sideways in a way that is natural to me to create a 'null' point to reduce or stop my eye movements. I suffer from eyestrain a lot more than an average person. Amazing work you people have done here with this app."
Mark Curtis
"I am good friends with a sufferer of nystagmus I let them try it and they said it is nothing like this at all the eyes move constantly but the vision does not they would not be allowed to drive if that was the case this app needs looked at again as it is giving false information about the condition.."
Scottish Force official
"Thank u for making this app my son has nystagmus he has just turned 2... it so much better now I can get an understanding of what it like what he see..."
Jasmine Rix
"This app has given me an insight in to how the world is viewed by people with this eye condition. It must be horrible. Thanks developers"
